As the festive season gave way to the realities of the new year, I found myself contemplating the future of education in 2024. Drawing on my three decades of experience at the intersection of technology and education, including roles such as Chair of the NSW Next Generation STEM Fund (GenSTEM) and CEO of Rozetta Institute, I anticipate and hope for several trends in the coming year.
Teaching Expertise First, AI Second:
Having navigated the dynamic landscape of technology and education, I recognize the crucial synergy between these realms. The key lies in leveraging digitization and data to enhance teaching efficacy. Teachers are increasingly using real-time insights to comprehend student progress, and the innovation in AI investment holds promise for even more impactful integration.
Time Reclamation for Teachers, More Joy in Teaching:
Acknowledging the time constraints and high stress levels among teachers, AI and automation are poised to give educators back valuable time. Smarter tools, exemplified by initiatives like the UK Government’s investment in AI-powered tools to reduce teacher workload, demonstrate the potential to alleviate stress and enhance the teaching profession.
Focus on Skills and Competencies:
The shift towards STEM prioritization by the Australian government underscores a focus on developing highly skilled and competent students. Initiatives like introducing pseudocode into the curriculum and additional funding for STEM-related university places align with preparing students for a digitized future.
Evolution of Context in Education:
Positive changes are evident in the Australian school curriculum, moving away from outdated perspectives and incorporating local context. Efforts to teach Indigenous Australians’ experiences of European colonization demonstrate a commitment to a more balanced and relevant historical framework.
Expect the Unexpected:
While the unexpected has become a constant in recent years, overcoming challenges in the education sector remains a driving force. With a supportive ecosystem of talented teachers and students, there is potential for positive evolution in 2024. Prioritizing skill development, leveraging data and digital tools, and integrating local context into learning will play pivotal roles.
David Wright, CEO at Edrolo, envisions a year where these trends take center stage, emphasizing the importance of enhancing teaching practices, supporting teachers, and providing students with a well-rounded and contextual education.
