Educators identify 8 essential tech skills that every student should possess.

Today’s students have grown up in an era dominated by smartphones, tablets, and virtual assistants. Their adeptness at navigating new apps and digital devices often surpasses that of adults, who frequently seek their guidance on adopting new technologies.

However, educators have observed a gap in fundamental technology skills and media literacy among many students. These skills include typing on a keyboard, conducting effective web searches, evaluating the credibility of online sources, and composing well-crafted email messages. Experts emphasize that these skills are not only essential for academic and career success but also crucial for navigating personal lives.

Dyane Smokorowski, the digital literacy coordinator for the Wichita school district in Kansas, highlights the importance of providing students with the tools to navigate and shape the future in digital classrooms. Integrating these tech skills into teaching, she says, opens doors for students, unlocking a future brimming with possibilities.
