The Walmart Center for Tech Excellence will be established jointly by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) and Walmart Global Tech (WGT). According to IIT-M, the center will focus on strengthening micro, small, and medium-sized firms (MSMEs) in manufacturing and retail. It will concentrate on creating solutions to assist MSMEs in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitization to improve operational efficiency and profitability.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Prof V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, stated, “The expansion of MSMEs is critical for economic progress. IIT Madras has undertaken many initiatives in this area, including one that assists MSMEs in lowering energy use. The research conducted via the Walmart Center will be extremely valuable to MSMEs.”
Furthermore, the center will seek to create an open-source, domain-agnostic platform for developing engineering analytics solutions and making them publicly available. It will also create a collection of case studies to boost AI adoption in the industrial and retail sectors. According to IIT Madras, these case studies will also be utilized to teach skilling programs focusing on the fundamentals of AI and its applications in various domains.
Suresh Kumar, Global CTO and CDO of Walmart Inc., stated, “As a people-led, tech-powered organization, we believe in using technology to serve people—rather than the other way around.” The Walmart Center for Tech Excellence reaffirms our commitment to communities and our mission to help people live better lives. As an IITM graduate, I am particularly pleased with our continuous connection. I’m both delighted and confident in our center’s ability to foster AI innovation and have a beneficial impact on India’s MSME community.”
