The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati partnered with Samagra Shiksha Assam to host a science and mathematics olympiad, aiming to cultivate a spirit of scientific inquiry among students.
As per a press statement from IIT Guwahati, the event saw the participation of more than 114,000 students representing 3,828 schools throughout Assam. The primary objective of the event was to encourage students’ proficiency in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.
Prof Parameswar K Iyer, Dean PRBR at IIT Guwahati, highlighted the institution’s close collaboration with Assam’s education department to enhance STEM activities throughout the state, utilizing dynamic initiatives such as Olympiads.
The objectives of the Olympiad, as outlined by IIT Guwahati, include fostering a spirit of scientific curiosity and mathematical reasoning among school students, identifying and supporting talented individuals in STEM fields, and offering a competitive platform for students to showcase their skills and capabilities
Raising awareness about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students and educators.

The Olympiad comprised two stages: an OMR-based test for secondary school students statewide, followed by a state-level round. The district-level examination took place on March 18, 2024, as stated in the press release.
The top two performers from each district were chosen to participate in the final round of the Olympiad at IIT Guwahati. This stage provided an opportunity for the finalists to engage with peers from across the state. Held on March 30, 2024, the final round involved 62 participants from classes 9th and 10th, resulting in the emergence of three state winners, as indicated by the institute.
