Meta Intends to introduce virtual reality headsets into schools for 13 year old children

Meta Platforms Inc. aims to introduce its virtual reality headset into educational settings. The company envisions students as young as 13 years old experiencing virtual trips to places like ancient Rome or the Metropolitan Museum of Art from classrooms in the Midwest. This initiative is part of Meta’s launch of a new educational product. The move comes as Meta and other social media companies are under congressional scrutiny for not providing enough protection for children online.

Meta’s move into the education sector is part of the company’s broader shift towards virtual and augmented reality. Although the adoption of the technology has been sluggish, Meta is optimistic that bringing it into classrooms will increase its visibility and make it more familiar, particularly to younger audiences.

Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, stated in an interview that the company is proceeding with “immense, strategic patience” in its approach. Meta’s overarching goal is to promote the use of virtual reality technology. The company’s expenses are projected to increase to between $94 billion and $99 billion this year, with most of the budget allocated for the technology infrastructure needed for virtual reality and artificial intelligence.
