Beginning Friday, the Pune Expressway will launch an AI-driven Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), a pioneering initiative in Maharashtra. This cutting-edge system utilizes artificial intelligence and data analytics to enhance vehicle movement and bolster road safety. The technology allows for automatic identification of various traffic violations, ensuring a more efficient driving experience for commuters.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) will supervise the system from a control center in Lonavala. A key aspect of the ITMS is its ability to automatically read vehicle number plates, enabling authorities to issue e-challans for traffic offenses. This automation is intended to deter offenders and facilitate quick enforcement of traffic regulations. Additionally, the system aims to reduce extended traffic congestion caused by disabled vehicles by swiftly identifying and reporting such incidents to the control center. At present, response times to these situations can surpass an hour, causing substantial delays and inconvenience for drivers.
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, a vital transportation route, experiences an average daily traffic volume of up to 40,000 vehicles, which increases to 60,000 on weekends. To manage this heavy traffic effectively, the ITMS will install over 200 AI-powered CCTV cameras on gantries along the 95-kilometer stretch of the expressway. These sophisticated cameras are capable of detecting up to 17 different types of traffic violations, ensuring thorough surveillance and enforcement.
